The evolution of consumers perception of wood grain is fascinating. I am just finishing reading the book "Wood" and the author talks about the pursuit of shiny object being a rejection of the natural or unrefined. (I wonder what he would say about the sundance catalog?). Anyway this is an interesting place to see it still holding on...high-end audio?

While I associate high gloss wood with "high end" taste, I psychologically do not make the transfer when it comes to a) putting it on my head without a resulting headache, b) high end sound quality - wood tends to deaden things, c) associating it with "hi - tech"........it is weird, I see that and my gut reaction feels like they disregard the emotional association with wood/woodgrain.....perhaps it my female sensitivities kicking in whereas a male (probably their target) relates differently to the finish. If that is the case, I would hope the "marketers" would not forget the female base so I would have a choice between wood and pink candy striped lollipops on my head - too sticky, sweet.

Good point. I did not even think about the wearability factor. It is a little like having a log across your head. I think that it is targeted at 20 year olds for whom wood grain has no real history. Nice to hear from you.
