Herrlicht

Julia sent me a link to these. Amazing craftsmanship. I wonder what the wood is? It almost looks like beech.

AJ's Music recommendations 08

For those who have commented that AJ's music recommendations seem to be getting edgy...I say well, yes. It was only a matter of time before the bitterness came to the surface. Here is his latest:

Man I've heard so much hype for The National but I just cannot dig them. I'm listening to their new one "High Violet" and it just reminds me of late 80's, early 90's, monotone music. I cannot tell you right now who it reminds me of but it is someone
from the mid to late 80's. Hater who is hating it...

I just figured it out. It sounds like David Sylvian and his post Japan solo work. There was a release by David Sylvian in the late 80's under the band name "Rain Tree Crow" and The National's new one sounds like David Sylvian recording another downer release.

concept

This is a much more comfortable position and still very cool. But what is with the cheesy and heavy-handed graphics?

texture

Cool looking texture and form language. The way the punched pattern relates to the form facets lends a nice functionality to both attributes. I also like the use of the grey but riding a bike in the position this bike requires for any extended amount of time really takes the fun out if riding.

Last day of school

Summer vacation starts at noon.

Gotham

The Gotham Bar and Grill, sort of down by Union Square, has some really great food and a decent atmosphere. The service is trying a little too hard and the prices are crazy but they make a very good Moscow Mule.

tree perch

Here is Ian helping build his tree platform.

resuse

Normal products that reuse other products just end up looking like a bunch of garbage stuck together but I think that this wine bottle patio torch is working. According to the site I found it on it was "designed" by erik anderson of gerardot & co.

Datacard SP75

The is the machine that prints drivers licenses. It looks better in person that in the photos and although the form is in on the verge of being over the top it works in the space. From the time the digital photo is taken until the license is complete is less than 3 minutes.

sleeper sofa

Slabby forms. It comes in grey and orange on Hivemodern.

Thanks wikipedia

A public house, informally known as a pub, is an establishment licensed to serve alcoholic drinks for consumption on the premises but does not offer lodging.

Bars provide stools or chairs that are placed at tables or counters for their patrons.

Inns are generally establishments or buildings where travelers can seek lodging and food and drink. They are typically located in the country or along a highway.

A tavern or pot-house is a place where people gather to drink alcoholic beverages. and, more than likely, also be served food. The word derives from the Latin meaning was a shed or workshop. In Renaissance England, a tavern was distinguished from a pub because drinkers were "guests" rather than members of the public.

Bistros are historically defined mostly by the foods they serve; slow-cooked foods like braised meats.

Cafe implies primarily serving coffee, typically complemented by a slice of cake/tart/pie, a "danish pastry", a plain bun, or similar sweet pastry or small plate meals.

A trattoria is an Italian-style eating establishment, less formal than a ristorante, but more formal than an osteria. There are generally no printed menus

oven

This geometric frame look is tough to pull off but I think that they did a good job of it here. I think that the finish helps too.

classic iphone

I think I will stick with my beat-up and somewhat dated looking first generation iphone...even though I can no longer get it to sync with my laptop.

iphone 4.0

The video chat feature sounds cool and it would be great to try to drive and use that. I also like the sound of the higher resolution display, although I don't read books on my iphone so I do not think I really need the upgrade. They did not mention any improvements to the phone which is the one area that is pretty weak on the iphone 1.0.

i2i

New i2i chair from Steelcase. I believe that this is meant to occupy the space in between lounge seating and task seating for small conversation areas in the workplace. The material usage looks interesting and the chunky volumes are unexpected from Steelcase but to me the details are a little too Nike inspired.

Etrade

It looks to me like this is the week to buy CMFO.

4.6.10

ball camera

Evo won the Ricon Shonan World Design competition with this concepts many, many years ago. i think that the concept was mostly Mike and Patrick's but it is hard to remember. Nice to see it come to production. I wonder if the functionality is the same?

Boothbay Post Office

Ian waiting by the lobster tank at the local post office in Maine. He doesn't eat the lobster rolls they sell but he does enjoy playing with the lobsters.

Playhouse

Cool playhouse. The boys would love this but $15,000 is a little steep.

AJ's Music recommendations 07

Here is the latest recommendation, straight from the man.

"I checked out the latest New Pornographers from the library on Friday. I'm a big fan of Neko Case mostly because I think she's hotter than Lady Gaga, and I think her red hair would look good in an all leather jump suit. Anyway, I normally like New Pornographers stuff, but for some reason the only stuff that I really like are the tunes that Dan Bejar's sings. I'm not a huge Destroyer fan, but it makes me want to dig those out and listen to them again."

The best AJ recommendation ever is Solomon Burke.
